Cowabunga! “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” bursts out of the sewers and into the hearts of fans everywhere with a blend of martial arts mayhem, wisecracking humor, and pizza-fueled camaraderie.
Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, this animated phenomenon transforms four ordinary turtles – Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael – into heroes-in-a-half-shell under the watchful eye of their rat sensei, Splinter. With iconic villains like Shredder and the Foot Clan and allies such as intrepid reporter April O’Neil, TMNT delivers a gnarly blend of action and laughs that defined a generation of Saturday morning cartoons.
Main Characters From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Leonardo

Though Leonardo, the leader of the TMNT, is the glue keeping the team together, he might not be the most flashy of the bunch. Leo, the team leader and eldest turtle, carries two razor-sharp katanas and sports a blue bandana. Still, his discipline and great feeling of obligation really distinguishes him.
Master Splinter trained, Leonardo aims to live up to the bushido values of honor, loyalty, and respect. Yes, he is teased for being “the serious one,” but without his cool-headed approach, the Turtles most likely would have ended up as sewer pizza years ago.
Donatello

Brains over brawn? Donatello’s got your back. The tech wizard and master inventor for the team is the purple-masked turtle. Whether Donnie is hacking into evil computer systems or creating retrofitted vehicles, his genius usually comes in very handy.
The modest bo staff is his preferred weapon since it perfectly captures his clever, non-aggressive character. He makes no mistake even if he occasionally seems lost in his own thoughts. Often with dangerously erratic outcomes, Donatello is always analyzing, computing, and cooking up the next great invention.
Michelangelo

Cowabunga, dude! Michelangelo is the one turtle that knows how to celebrate. Mikey is the team’s soul with his orange mask, nunchaku techniques, and never-ending love of pizza. He brings to every project comic relief, optimism, and a little surfer-dude flair.
Mikey might be skateboarding into battle or producing sound effects as he flips through the air while others arrange the fight. Benevolent behind the goofball antics, though, is a shockingly intelligent turtle who often sees the heart of a situation faster than the others.
Raphael

Red bandana. Sai-wielding. Temper-prone. There is more to Raphael than meets the eye, but that is his essence. The team’s hothead, Raph isn’t hesitant to voice his opinions or, if words can’t be found, to use physical force. Although his sarcasm can be hurtful, it serves as a protective mechanism for his more intense emotions.
A fiercely devoted protector lies beneath that tough exterior. Raphael is the one who charges in head-first when danger arises, even though he may argue with his brothers and question Leo’s leadership. No questions asked!
April O’Neil

April is more than just a helpless damsel in distress; she is the courageous news reporter for Channel 6 who never backs down from a challenge to get the truth. April, who wears her recognizable yellow jumpsuit, is frequently in hot water due to her curiosity, but it also helps reveal Shredder and Krang’s plots.
She develops a special relationship with the turtles, particularly Donatello, and frequently serves as a conduit between them and the outside world. April demonstrates that you don’t need ninja training to be a hero, whether she’s filming breaking news or breaking into a Foot Clan base.
Master Splinter / Hamato Yoshi

Master Splinter is the turtles’ mentor and moral compass; he is stoic, wise, and fiercely protective. After a tragic encounter with a mutagen, Hamato Yoshi, a human martial arts master, was transformed into a rat.
Splinter maintains his honor and spiritual teachings in spite of his metamorphosis. His zen-like serenity and deep voice give his impetuous sons a sense of grounded wisdom. Splinter is a strong fighter and a continual reminder that true strength starts within, even though he prefers peace.
Vernon Fenwick

There should be some drama in every newsroom, and Vernon Fenwick delivers plenty. Vernon, April’s coworker at Channel 6, is a combination of comic relief, cowardice, and vanity.
He frequently gets himself into trouble because he always has his camera with him and his ego is always one step ahead of his courage. However, Vernon isn’t totally worthless; occasionally, his gaffes result in significant discoveries. However, unless it gets him airtime, don’t expect him to acknowledge that the turtles are heroes.
Irma

Irma, April’s best friend and the receptionist for Channel 6, is witty, intelligent, and genuinely endearing. Although her sardonic humor and unfortunate romantic life make people laugh, she also exhibits bravery when necessary. Irma provides comic contrast and loyalty by frequently accompanying the turtles on their missions.
Her heart, humor, and ability to roll with mutants and madness like it’s just another day in New York City make up for her lack of ninja skills and a fancy gadget belt.
Burne Thompson

Burne Thompson, the chief editor of Channel 6, is always yelling at Vernon for being ineffective or at April for going rogue. Burne is a ratings-driven individual with a personality larger than his mustache who hardly ever believes April’s tales of mutant turtles.
Nevertheless, his rough demeanor contributes to the media circus atmosphere of the television series. Ironically, Burne’s distrust contributes to the turtles’ safety. After all, if your boss thinks they’re fiction, who’s going to investigate them?
Carter

Carter, a teenage martial artist who joins the television series later, is an essential ally of the turtles. He is cool, self-assured, and somewhat rebellious. He is drawn to the turtles’ cause and eventually experiences mutation firsthand. An unstable mutagen causes Carter to momentarily change into the massive creature known as the “Savage Turtle.”
But he never lets that deter him from battling evil. Particularly during fights with Dregg in the show’s darker later seasons, Carter infuses the squad with a breath of fresh air.
Casey Jones

Imagine Casey Jones as the turtles’ vigilante cousin who wields a hockey stick. Casey takes street justice into his own hands, frequently in the most chaotic manner possible, while sporting a signature hockey mask and a plethora of athletic equipment.
Despite his rough exterior and tendency to become enraged easily, he has an indisputable sense of justice. Casey doesn’t always play nice like the turtles do, which leads to some crazy team-ups (and hilarious arguments). Nevertheless, Casey goes all out for the good guys when the chips are down.
Zach

Introducing Zach, the self-described “Fifth Turtle.” This teenager is the biggest fan of the turtles and is more likely than you might imagine to participate in their adventures. Zach begins as an overly eager child who is desperate to fit in, but he quickly shows his value through his quick thinking and ferocious loyalty.
His enthusiasm often gets him in trouble, but he also represents the animated series’s target audience: wide-eyed kids who dream of joining the ninja action. Zach does surprisingly well for a human.
Shredder / Oroku Saki

The turtles’ greatest enemy is Oroku Saki, also known as The Shredder, who is vicious, unrelenting, and frequently overly dramatic. He leads the Foot Clan with flair and menace, wearing a set of steel-studded armor that would frighten even a porcupine. Shredder was once a fellow martial arts student of Hamato Yoshi, and his deep-seated resentment is driven by betrayal, jealousy, and a desire for vengeance.
Tension is increased by his erratic alliance with Krang, particularly since they can’t seem to go five minutes without yelling at one another. Despite all of his mistakes, Shredder is still a classic villain—shrewd, fashionable, and constantly enraged.
Krang

Krang, a disembodied warlord brain with an ego larger than his robotic body, is unlike any villain you have ever seen. He is straight out of Dimension X. Krang was a vicious conqueror in his own dimension before being exiled and joining forces with Shredder to reclaim his position of authority.
He has a voice that sounds like someone gargling through a kazoo (thanks to the great Pat Fraley), and he is manipulative and patronizing. Many of the two’s more outrageous schemes, such as the construction of the Technodrome and interdimensional invasions, are motivated by his genius-level intelligence.
