Let’s Shake Off Your Memory About The Arthur Show

- Release date: October 7, 1996
- Developed by: Kathy Waugh, Marc Brown
- Number of episodes: 253
Whether you grew up shouting “Hey, DW!” or humming along to that jazzy theme song (thank you, Ziggy Marley!), Arthur wasn’t just a cartoon—it was a childhood era. This legendary PBS Kids show followed the life of Arthur Read, a glasses-wearing aardvark with a kind heart, a bookish streak, and a knack for getting into just the right kind of trouble.
Created by Marc Brown and developed for TV by Kathy Waugh, the series didn’t just entertain. It taught kids (and adults alike) to deal with school bullies and to understand friends with autism. Just look at how Arthur handled big feelings with small-town charm. And don’t get us started on Buster’s wild theories or Francine’s epic confidence!
Now, Remember These Familiar Names?
Arthur Timothy Read

Our titular character, Arthur Read, gives us an impression of a typical bookworm with ever-present eyeglasses. Indeed, this three-grade student has a keen passion for reading. But Arthur’s real life is much more colorful than the imaginary world in books.
His friends come from various cultures, family types, and backgrounds, but he always treats them equally with kindness. He also introduces kids to a gentler way of embracing individual differences and dealing with autism, bullying, illness, parents’ divorces, disabilities, and more.
Dora Winifred “D.W.” Read

Dora Winifred “D.W.” Read, or “D.W.” as she likes to call herself, is Arthur’s 4-year-old younger sister. The preschooler is depicted as a cute aardvark dressing in a pink sleeveless knee-length dress with a brown bob cut. However, underneath that adorable appearance lies a sassy and ready-for-a-barrel attitude, especially towards her brother.
D.W.’s envy of Arthur’s “older” privileges is a recurring theme, which explains why she always tries to annoy him. As a self-centered character, she often threw a tantrum when things didn’t go her way. Oh, and she really has a knack for simplifying complex words from “taxpaying” to “taxipaying” and “orphans” to “organs,” you name it!
Buster Baxter

We all have a buddy who stays slim no matter how much they eat. And Buster Baxter, Arthur’s best friend, is an example. This white rabbit brings a lighthearted vibe to the show with his fun-loving and easy-going manner.
Buster takes pride in telling jokes, but they lean toward the odd side at times. His firm belief in superstition also adds a hilarious charm to this beloved character. Such a worry-free, laid-back attitude sometimes makes us forget about his hardship—riddling with asthma and living in a divorced family.
Francine Alice Frensky

Who says girls can’t do boys’ things? Francine Alice Frensky proves the opposite! She is a real tomboy, standing out among the characters from the Arthur cartoon. We often see her wearing a red sweater with jeans, her hair clipped with two barrettes on two sides.
Adding to her bold appearance is her love for sports. Let us tell you, Francine Frensky is a Jack of all trades as she excels at almost every sport, only second to Brain. No wonder she creates a buzz everywhere she goes at school, though she’s not very happy with that kind of popularity.
Mary Alice “Muffy” Crosswire

Come on, Muffy would be jealous if we mention Francine but not her. Also a monkey like Francine, yet Mary Alice “Muffy” Crosswire bears little to no resemblance to her bestie. If there’s something that the two share, it would be their haughty attitude that gets them in trouble.
Donning a purple-and-white dress with two braids, Muffy is the true reflection of a stereotypically spoiled rich kid. Her self-centered personality also earns her a “show-off” label.
Binky Barnes

As the leader of a bully gang, Binky Barnes breathes a little drama into the show. Teasing friends comes naturally to him, though he isn’t mean at heart. His bulky build as an overweight bulldog further causes his friends to keep him at arm’s length.
Later in the cartoon series, the tough character takes a turning point and becomes Arthur Read’s softer and more lovely friend. Of course, he doesn’t give up his teasy nature, yet his thoughtful, sensitive, and animal-loving traits make him good friend material.
Alan “The Brain” Powers

Alan “The Brain” Powers is indeed “The Brain” of the series. He’s an all-rounder who has a flair for both academic and athletic work. Getting an A overall already makes him a real asset to the class, and on the field, he turns on the mode of an excellent football player to the point that it becomes his professional career.
Brain’s good qualities know no bounds; out of school, he also helps his parents with their ice cream parlor. A role model for a good student, good child, and good kid!
Sue Ellen Armstrong

Sue Ellen Armstrong pretty much represents international citizens these days. Since her father is a diplomat, she’s traveled to and lived in various places around the globe. In the series, she is a transfer to Lakewood Elementary School and quickly blends in with others. Being exposed to diverse cultures, Sue Ellen proves herself an open-minded and resourceful friend.
She was born with a talent for martial arts but is also interested in physical-intensive hobbies like taekwondo or karate. That’s why she is among very few Arthur TV show characters who aren’t scared of Binky from the beginning.
Fern Walters

If you spot the quietest one in Arthur’s group of friends, it’s definitely Fern Walters. Timid and shy, this brown dog embodies an introverted student (her mom even tries to encourage her to be a bit more extroverted).
However, when it comes to mysterious and horror stories, Fern switches to her enthusiastic mode, revealing her lesser-known side. Her keen passion for mysteries, combined with her cleverness, empowers her to become an amateur sleuth. So, girls, don’t worry if you appear too quiet among others, as long as you have a passion to pursue!
Prunella Deegan

A walking snob is what we could imagine about Prunella Deegan, a poodle in a blue dress. As she’s one year older than Arthur Read and his friends, Prunella carries a snobbish and know-it-all attitude in earlier seasons of the show. She keeps bragging about her past wins and achievements. Thank God, this trait is toned down a bit in the next few seasons.
Throughout the show, Prunella consistently expresses her interest in yoga, paranormal phenomena, fortune telling, and Henry Skreever books—a Harry Potter parody.
George Lundgren

Another quiet introvert, George Lundgren is described to be suffering from dyslexia (a learning disorder that makes reading a challenge). His frequent nosebleeds also gross out other classmates, driving them away and isolating him.
But these barriers can’t stop him from shining with his talent for building and construction. Inheriting his woodworker father’s love for construction, George wins many creation contests at school. It’s okay to be different, isn’t it?
Tommy Tibble & Timmy Tibble

Wherever Tommy goes, Timmy follows. Enter the Tibble Twins—troublemaking characters from Arthur the cartoon. They’re almost identical; the only difference is that Tommy wears a red scarf, while Timmy is seen in a blue scarf.
At the same age as D.W., they usually torment her with their mischievous, silly schemes, getting her in trouble. Despite being destructive and annoying, the twins do display a kind, good-hearted side at times.
Emily Leduc

Here comes the only trans-species in the entire series, Emily Leduc, a half-monkey, half-rabbit character. She is D.W.’s friend and also rival in many aspects. As a stickler for perfection, Emily aims to take the lead in many activities, and she usually outperforms D.W.
She is somewhat influenced by French culture since she has a French nanny. She has blond hair and typically wears a pink dress, which changes to blue from the sixth season. Emily also has a knack for gymnastics, which is how she meets and befriends D.W.
Jenna Morgan

Being the center of attention is NEVER Jenna Morgan’s intention; she only wants to lead a lowkey, normal student life. But in the badminton court, few can outshine Jenna; she’s even awarded as the Athlete of the Year.
There’s one little secret that she wants to keep to herself for life: her nocturnal enuresis. This bedwetting habit makes her dreadful when receiving Muffy’s invitation to a slumber party. But in the end, no one judges or makes fun of her. To all kids out there, bedwetting is normal!
And Don’t Forget These “NPCs”!
David Leonard Read
This is Arthur’s calm and quirky dad, who runs a catering business. Always ready with a goofy pun or an unexpected dad joke, he brings warm “dad energy” into every episode.
Jane Read
Arthur Read’s mom is the glue of the Read household. She’s patient, practical, and always juggling a dozen things—yet somehow still finds time to read to the kids and offer wise advice.
Caitlin “Baby Kate” Read
Caitlin “Baby Kate” Read may not say much (at least to the adults), but in her baby world, she’s got quite the imagination. She shares hilarious, thought-filled conversations with Pal the dog that only the viewers get to enjoy.
Grandpa Dave
Grandpa Dave is Arthur’s maternal grandfather and a gentle, slightly forgetful soul. His stories and hugs are always welcome, though sometimes his memory leads to some unexpected family adventures.
Grandma Thora Read
She’s Arthur’s parental grandmother. This is an ultimate grandma—baking cookies, playing cards, and even joining Arthur on wild quests. Thora Read’s sporty, spunky, and definitely not your average senior citizen.
Nigel Ratburn
Better known as Mr. Ratburn, Nigel Ratburn is Arthur’s legendary third-grade teacher. He’s tough but fair, with a love for homework and cake—and yes, he’s secretly awesome.
Alberto Molina
Alberto is the chill, soccer-loving teenager from Ecuador who lives next door. Arthur and his friends look up to him for his coolness and worldliness—and his epic soccer skills, of course.
Adil Akyuz
This is Arthur’s pen pal from Turkey, introduced in a sweet episode about friendship across cultures. He’s thoughtful and curious and shows that being different doesn’t mean being distant.
Catherine Frensky
Catherine Frensky is Francine’s fashionable, slightly dramatic older sister. She’s into magazines and teenage trends. And this minor character not always thrilled about her dad’s job as a sanitation worker.
Carl Gould
Despite being on the autism spectrum, Carl is a gentle, incredibly smart kid. He’s obsessed with trains, facts, and routines—and brings a beautifully unique perspective to Arthur’s world.
Chip Crosswire
Chip Crosswire is Muffy’s too-cool-for-school older brother. A college student who rarely visits, his appearances always spark drama (and a little admiration from Francine).
