"Digimon: Digital Monsters,
Digimons are the champions!"
In the seventies, there were Pet Rocks. The nineties brought "Virtual Pets," digital keychain animals like Tamagotchi and Gigapet. While the fad lasted, we were chained to our little digital monsters, dutifully feeding them, playing with them and serving at their beck and call. At the close of the decade, the Saturday morning series Digimon: Digital Monsters took the craze one step further, animating the little digital pets to fight one another.
When the Pokémon craze hit in the late 90's, every kids' TV producer took notice. Companies scrambled to import similar shows from Japan, and Saban found a winner in Toei's Digimon. The new show featured "Digital Monsters" that morphed into different, bigger incarnations as they evolved. And like Pokémon, each Digimon developed different skills and quirks as it grew, passing through levels from In-Training to Rookie to Champion to Ultimate to Mega and beyond.
In the series, seven kids—courageous Tai, tomboy Sora, rebellious Matt, insecure Joe, air-headed Mimi, the baby T.K. and computer whiz Izzy—were mysteriously transported to Digi-World and befriended by strange talking creatures called digimon (short for "digital monsters"). The little digi-critters hoped to "digivolve" into bigger digimon to defeat the evil Kuwaggomon, Devimon, Etemon and others. Now stuck in this bizarre world, the kids each teamed up with a digimon partner from each level in order to defeat the evil digmon. While the various digimon battled one another to save Digi-World from evil, the kids worked to find a way to get back to the human world.
TK and Kari stuck around for the show's second season, but a new group of kids entered the Digi-World as well: Davis, Yuli, Cody and Ken. Naturally, new digimon and new digivolutions awaited as well. Still airing on Fox's Saturday morning schedule, Digimon is a weekly cartoon reminder that everything in our world is going digital—even little monsters.
In season 3, Takato has grown up watching Tai, Davis, and all the other DigiDestined on the Digimon: Digital Monsters television show and playing the card game (meaning that this series is basically another dimension, where the adventures of the previous seasons were being followed for entertainment). Imagine his surprise when he accidentally creates his own Digimon, Guilmon, in the real world! He's not the only kid in town with a Digimon, though...
Henry and Terriermon quickly befriend Takato and Guilmon, but making friends with Rika and Renamon is a different story. Rika believes that Digimon are in the real world for only one purpose- to fight other Digimon. When a strange dimension is formed between Earth and the Digital World, however, these three kids must put aside their differences to battle the strongest digital monsters ever!
All new heroes and monsters mean all new rules, like digivolving in the real world can be disastrous without the help of an orphan Digimon, Calumon. Also, a mysterious government agency called Hypnos has been tracking Digimon activity. With unclear motives, Hypnos could be out to protect the Digimon or destroy them completely!
Then along came season 4, which completely changed how the whole game is played. 5 children receive strange messages on their cell phones that lead them to a train that takes them to the "Digital World"; a strange world filled with bizzare creatures called "Digimon". These children have been sent there to stop an evil Digimon named Cherubimon from completely annihilating the planet of all its inhabitants. In order to accomplish this, the 5 children must locate their "spirits", which will evolve them into the Legendary Warrior Digimon. Unfortunately for them Cherubimon has ordered his servants to stop the kids from finishing the mission; eventually the children will have to fight Cherubimon's forces in order to save the planet.
With five new kids and an exciting new mission in the Digi-World, Digimon Frontier brings back all the great action and adventure of the last three seasons. Takuya, Kouji, Zoe, J.P. and Tommy meet each other in a train that takes them to the Digi-World where a war against evil is being fought. The Angel digimon, Cherubimon, one of The three angels sent to save the World from the power-hungry Lucemon, has turned to the dark side and the entire Digi-World is in peril. To fight this great battle, the five CHOSEN ONES must become digimon. Something that no digidestined has done before.
