|The Addams Family originated as a series of ghoulish cartoons created by Charles Addams for publication in The New Yorker magazine. They have gone on to become a veritable cottage industry, spawning five television shows—three live action and two animated—as well as two feature films.
This incarnation came from Hanna-Barbera (although the actual animation was done in England) and featured the Addams Family—Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Fester, Lurch, Granny, and Cousin Itt—tooling around America in a haunted camper, complete with a moat, bats, and dark clouds overhead at all times. Also on board were a host of icky animals, including Mr. V the vulture, Alley the alligator, Ocho the octopus, and a lion named Kitty-Cat.
Veterans of the original live action series Jackie Coogan and Ted Cassidy lent their voice talents to Uncle Fester and Lurch, respectively. The voice of Pugsley was provided by future Oscar winner Jodie Foster, in a role that no doubt prepared her for dealing with psycopaths in Silence of the Lambs.
The second (and final) season of the Addams Family consisted entirely of reruns of the 17 original episodes. With the success of the early 90's features The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, ABC aired an all-new Addams Family cartoon in 1992.
