This tv version of the popular kids talent show debuted on The NBC TV network on Sunday morning January 30, 1949. Actor/ singer and radio/ tv broadcast Ed Herlihy was the third and last host/ performer to mc the program (Actor and broadcast Paul Douglass, best remembered for his roles in films like "Angels In The Outfield" and serving as the announcer on "The Ed Wynn Radio Show" and radio/ tv game show host/ creator and producer Ralph Edwards of "Truth Or Consequnces fame were the first ones to mc the series on radio.

Herlihy hosted the show on radio and eventually brought the program to tv. Every week Herlihy would introduce talented youngsters who would perform song and dance numbers, acting, perform magic, puppetry etc on the show. More often than not Mr. Herlihy would perform with the contestants on the show. Some of the series' alumni would go onto successful careers as adult performers: EG Leslie Uggems, Gregory Hines, Robert Q.Lewis and Arnold Stang were among the many kids that made their performing debuts on the show.

"The Horn & Hardat Children's Hour" remained a popular fixture on NBC TV's Sunday morning schedule until the show was dropped following it's sunday May 24, 1957 broadcast. The program returned to the airways (Although locally on WABD TV Ch.5 in NYC) as "The Children's Hour" moving to a Saturday evening timeslot on Ch.5. Herlihy continued to host "The Children's Hour!" on WABD TV Ch.5 in NYC from Saturday evening October 5, 1957 until the hour finally ended on Saturday July 12, 1958.
