On Monday Evening September 9,1963 Comic Character actor/ Mimic and scripwriter Eddie Lawrence brought his bizzare sage character, "The Old Philosoper" to Ch.11's weekday evening schedule as he hosted "The Eddie Lawrence Show".
Set against the backdrop of an art decco set, Lawrence performed character comedy skits and read viewers mail (Which consisted of jokes) inbetween reruns of "The Three Stooges" film comedies. Lawrence's show became a hit with kids, adults and teens. His viewers created fan clubs and one High School created and performed a song in his honor. His show also became a favorite with Johnny Carson's version of NBC TV's "Tonight Show" and Carson would have Lawrence do many guest appearances on his program.
Unfortunetaly, "The Eddie Lawrence Show" was not appreciated by the station execs at WPIX TV and they constantly censored his skits and forced him to reuse viewer's fan mail and they would not videotape his segements for his show. After two weeks of constant fighting with the station execs, Eddie Lawrence left WPIX TV and NYC Kids following The Friday September 16, 1963 broadcast of his series.
