Larry Hama and Michael Golden’s all-animal space saga Bucky O’Hare debuted as a graphic novel, Echo of Futurepast, in 1984. The comic’s hero was a green anthropomorphic rabbit named Bucky O’Hare, captain of the space ship “Righteous Indignation.” O’Hare’s crew consisted of a “witchcat” named Jenny, sharpshooting and foul-tempered Deadeye Duck, a big ape named Bruiser, and a one-eyed android named Blinky. Together, the crew patrolled the Aniverse, an alternate world devoid of human beings, keeping the skies safe from the evil amphibians of the planet Genus and their android toad leader, Complex.

The graphic novel was elaborate and often very violent, not exactly what cartoon executives had in mind for series development. But the phenomenal worldwide success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (another cult comic book adaptation) changed the animated landscape. Marvel and Sunbow commissioned twelve episodes of Bucky O’Hare and The Toad Wars, airing them in syndication in 1991.

The show included a human regular, a bespectacled boy named Willy DuWitt, a budding genius whose photon accelerator opened a passage between the human universe and the Aniverse. The animated series carried on the complex storylines of the graphic novel, but it proved too much for younger viewers. The twelve original episodes were the only ones ever produced.
