Jellystone Park’s most famous resident went big-screen for a 1964 feature-length adventure. Hey There, It’s Yogi Bear was the first movie adventure for the title bear, who first sprang to popularity as a supporting segment on Huckleberry Hound in the late 50’s. It was also Hanna-Barbera’s first foray into feature animation.

The film finds Yogi still hamming it up in Jellystone, swiping “Pic-a-nic” baskets and irking Ranger Smith. Best buddy Boo Boo is along for the ride, as is the lovely Cindy Bear (sporting a healthy new brown coat of fur, as opposed to the blue pelt she had worn in the series).

Yogi and Cindy’s romance is proceeding nicely until Cindy gets caught up in the world of a scheming showman. The impresario forces Cindy into a perilous high-wire act at his cruel circus, where only a certain smarter-than-the-average bear can save her.

The movie was a success for Hanna-Barbera, playing regularly in Saturday matinees for years after its release. Yogi’s popularity continued with a string of cartoon series, direct-to-video movies, and television specials that has spanned four decades to date, making him significantly wealthier than the average bear. Meanwhile, Hanna-Barbera turned to another of its classic characters for its feature-length follow-up, 1966's spy spoof The Man Called Flintstone.
