It seems like Batman and Robin have been around—in one incarnation or another—forever. From the serials of the 40’s (featuring a Batman with droopy ears and an aging Boy Wonder) to the 90's Batman: The Animated Series, the Caped Crusader has been fighting crime in both television and movies on and off since the late Bob Kane created him in 1939.
The same can be said of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan, the human boy raised by animals in the wilds of Africa. The loinclothed hero starred in two syndicated radio series—one in the 30's and one in the 50's—as well as a television series from 1966-68 featuring Ron Ely.
In 1976, CBS brought the T man back, this time as a Saturday morning half hour entitled Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle. This half-hour series aired for a year, until CBS decided to pair Tarzan with Batman in The Batman/Tarzan Adventure Hour.
The Batman half-hour featured Adam West and Burt Ward reprising their roles as Batman and Robin from the 60’s live-action series, albeit in voice form. There was no Alfred the butler in this version; instead, the Dynamic Duo were joined by Batgirl and a spritelike midget alien called Batmite, who provided comic relief.
The Tarzan segments featured the "ape man" engaging in dangerous jungle adventures. This show only lasted one year, becoming Tarzan and the Super 7 in 1978. |
