|Classic storytelling and Disney animatronics combined in Welcome To Pooh Corner, the silly old bear’s first live-action TV series. A.A. Milne’s beloved Winnie the Pooh joined his famous pals for songs, laughs and moral lessons, all delivered in a sweet, simple manner to the show’s pre-school viewers.
Set deep in the Hundred Acre Woods, the show starred honey-loving bear Winnie the Pooh, worrywart Piglet, bouncy Tigger, fussbudget Rabbit, wise old Owl, down in the dumps Eeyore, motherly Kanga and little Roo. But unlike Disney’s earlier animated versions, these animals were actual actors in large costumes, with mouths and eyes controlled by “advanced puppetronics.”
With songs by Dan Crow and Robin Frederick, among others, Welcome to Pooh Corner always had a musical diversion or two to keep spirits light, but the focus was on basic messages of kindness, friendship, sharing, honesty and other virtues. The show’s mix of light-hearted fun and life lessons earned it several awards during its long run on cable’s Disney Channel, where it started off weekday mornings for tykes across the country. The bear and his friends eventually returned to storybooks and animation, but Welcome to Pooh Corner remains a cherished favorite of many a Pooh fan.
