Dr. Dolittle was created by Hugh Lofting in 1920 and appeared in a series of children’s novels over the next three decades. Dolittle was a veterinarian who not only tended to the animals' medical needs, but could talk to them as well.

The character appeared in a short-lived radio series on NBC in 1932, and in 1967 was brought to the big screen in a musical version, with Rex Harrison in the title role. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture, providing the spark for this 1970 animated series.

In The Further Adventures of Dr. Dolittle, the good doctor sailed the seas on his ship, the Flounder, and often found himself at odds with the cantankerous Sam Scurvy, an appropriately named pirate. Dolittle was joined in his quests by his 14-year-old assistant Tommy Stubbins, and by Mooncat, a lunar kitten. Of course, the animals that the good Doctor communicated with played a prominent role as well. The menagerie was joined on occasion by a rock group called the Grasshoppers.

The show aired for two seasons, the second consisting entirely of repeats.
